07.10.10: Newham young footballers take on the City and (almost) win

On 6th October 2010, a team of Newham young people from a Community Links youth club reached the final of the Private Equity Foundation (PEF) Charity World Cup, beating a host of corporate teams along the way.

After beating Blackstone Real Estate Partners and Deloitte, they were just pipped to the trophy by private equity firm Doughty Hanson & Co, who thrashed out a 1-0 win in the final. Community Links team captain Henry Olewunne said:

The team played brilliantly only conceding one goal, although unfortunately it was in the final. They have done us all proud with the young guys playing against all the grown ups from the business world. We are looking forward to coming back to the next Private Equity Foundation football tournament and winning!”

Ex-Liverpool and Republic of Ireland player, Phil Babb, supporting the event said:

“Having grown up in one of the more deprived working class areas of South London, I know how important it is to have community centres and to make sure young people have a focus in their lives. It was great to see everyone come to the event tonight and support the great work of the Private Equity Foundation.”

The event raised £38,000 for PEF’s work supporting charities working with disadvantaged young people, one of which is Community Links. A donation from PEF built Community Links’ centre on the Rokeby Estate in Stratford, which now runs a whole range of activities for children, young people, families and pensioners.
